MURNAU – THE ARTIST TOWN OF LAKE STAFFELSEE

Why Murnau is the artist town

Nature, art and culture enter into a unique connection in Murnau. The picturesque landscape with a free panoramic view of the Alpine chain and changing blue light moods inspired world-famous artists such as Kandinsky and the painter group of the Blue Rider. Franz Marc awarded the honorary title “Das Blaue Land” to the northern part of the Zugspitz region.

The castle museum is home to the world’s largest exhibition of Münter paintings and shows regular special exhibitions in addition to the “Blaue Reiter-Abteilung” and a permanent exhibition on reverse glass painting.

What to do in Murnau

With southern flair and mountain views, the Murnau pedestrian zone presents itself with its sidewalk cafes, taverns and shops. With cappuccino, ice cream or a freshly brewed beer from the local breweries Kargbräu and the Schaubrauerei Griesbräu, locals and holiday guests quickly get into conversation, shopping becomes a stress-free experience.

The Tourist Information offers a guest program with over 500 events. Especially nature-related tours are in the Murnauer Moos, the largest alpenrand moor in Central Europe.

Those who prefer to enjoy their time without program, visit the lake Staffelsee or take a tour with the “MS Seehausen” on the Staffelsee, one of the warmest bathing lakes in Bavaria.

Activities in the Region

Between the lakes and in front of the mountains, cycling brings fitness and mental relaxation to many varied cycling routes. On one of the numerous circular hiking trails, the Upper Bavarian alpine foothills are opened up particularly intensively. Especially popular is the trail around the Staffelsee.
