People’s admiration for visual illusions predates the invention of the cinema. In the 19. Century, artists used to create large-scale circular paintings. The breathtaking Bourbaki Panorama keeps this unique genre alive.
In an enormous 360° painting (112 x 10 m) artist Edouard Castres, immortalized one of the defining events in Swiss history: a defeated French army is rescued and interned in Switzerland in the harsh winter of 1871. This great act of solidarity strengthened the feeling of national identity among the Swiss people.
